Dog Licensing Regulations

HRM By-Law A-300 requires all owners to license their dogs annually by April 1.  The licensing year runs from April 1 to March 31.

Owners are required to apply for a license within 10 days of obtaining a dog. If you obtain your dog before September 30, you must pay the full licensing fee. If you obtain your dog after September 30, you pay the pro-rated fee.

Dangerous Dog Licensing Regulations

The owner of any dog classified as a "dangerous dog" must license their dog as a dangerous dog in the municipal registry each year.

Grandfathered Prohibited Animal Licensing Regulations

HRM By-Law A-300 requires all owners of grandfathered prohibited animals to license their pets annually by April 1. The licensing year runs from April 1 to March 31.

How Do I License My Pet

You can license your pet or pay for your license renewal:

  • by mailing a completed licensing form with the correct payment to:

  • with a credit card by calling the HRM Citizen Contact Centre at 311 or 1-800-835-6428 (toll-free in Nova Scotia only) - license renewals only.

* Proof must be provided to be eligible for license discounts. Individuals must be 65 or older to receive the seniors' discount.

Violating Pet Licensing Regulations

Pet owners found to be in violation of HRM By-Law A-300 licensing regulations may:

  • be issued a warning notice.
  • be issued a Summary Offense Ticket of $342.41 or greater.
  • face prosecution in a court of law.
