Emera Oval Closed for the Season –

On March 9th, the Emera Oval closed for the season. Thank you HRM for another amazing skating season!

Currently, the site is being dismantled in preparation for anticipated summer construction work to install some permanent features. Maintaining an outdoor ice surface is extremely technical. With the help of chillers, oval operations staff is able to maintain good quality ice to temperatures of up to 10 degrees Celsius between the months of December and March.

As soon as March hits, the position of the sun is such that it becomes difficult to sustain the ice no matter what the outside temperatures. In addition, the severe temperature fluctuations that have become common during the winter season have added to the challenge. Last year the oval closed for the season on March 4th.

The season was a great success. Approximately 130,000 skaters enjoyed a skate on the oval since it opened on December 23rd. Thanks for your support!
