What’s the Current Status?
The Bedford Waterfront Steering Committee, established by Regional Council to oversee this study, met and reviewed the comments received and recommendations as to whether to proceed to implement the consultant’s study recommendations as presented or with amendments. The study and steering committee recommendations were also reviewed by Bedford Watershed Advisory Committee and the North West Planning Advisory Committee. The reports can be found at the links below:
The reports were tabled with North West Community Council for consideration. However, prior to making a recommendation, Regional Council accepted a staff recommendation to initiate a servicing study for this area and defer further public consultation on the Bedford Waterfront project until the servicing study is completed. The staff report regarding the servicing study can be found on the link below. The study is currently in progress.
Background - Community Visioning
In February 2007, the Municipality initiated a community visioning process in collaboration with the community of Bedford to create a vision for the Bedford Waterfront. The Bedford Waterfront Community Liaison Group (CLG) was established to engage local citizens and provide a vision as to how the community should look and feel in 5, 10, to 25 years. In October 2007, Regional Council adopted the community vision and an action plan. Visit the "Visioning Process" link for further detail on the process, the vision and the action plan.
Background - The Bedford Waterfront Design Study
The Municipality and Waterfront Development Corporation, a provincial crown corporation with a mandate to champion provincial interests for lands around Halifax Harbour and the Bedford Basin, have engaged a consultant to prepare a design study for the Bedford Waterfront.
Four Vision Implementation Committee members sit on a steering committee to guide the urban design study and participation program. The steering committee also includes representatives of the three major property owners within the study area - Waterfront Development Corporation Limited, United Gulf Limited and Sobeys Leased Properties Limited. The area councillor serves as an ex-officio, non-voting member.
A design brief with three alternative design options [PDF, 37.89MB] was presented to the public on June 10, 2009 at Basinview Elementary School. Based on the input received, the steering committee provided direction to the consultant regarding the preferred design solution.
A public presentation of the Bedford Waterfront Design Study took place on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at Basinview Community School. Residents and stakeholders are invited to provide their feedback to Paul Morgan or Terry Drisdelle at the addresses listed below.
