Public Reference Service
The Municipal Archives facilitates on-site and remote access to its holdings. Reference services can be accessed in person, by phone, email or fax. Contact Us with your reference request.
Research Services
The Municipal Archives limits the amount of research, (actually consulting archival records) on behalf of public researchers, to one hour per year per researcher. Staff will do all we can to help researchers identify good archival sources - but cannot take the time to do more than minimal research for users.
Users requiring additional research assistance can consult our List of Professional Researchers (pdf).
Copying Services
Copies of records may be provided in various formats depending on researcher’s needs, the needs of the records, and legal restrictions.
Copying Services and Fees (pdf) outline the conditions and cost of this service.
If researchers can specifically identify the material they need copied, request for copies can be submitted by email or phone. Researchers at the Archives can make their own copies (digital or paper) of material available on microfilm; otherwise all copying is done by Archives staff or external services.
Payment
The Archives can receive payment by cash, cheque or money order. Invoices can be paid in-person at HRM's Customer Service Centres. If you anticipate ordering copies when you visit the Archives, please bring cash or a cheque.
Permission to Use Copies
If copies are to be used for a project beyond research or private study (eg. a publication, promotional item, web-site), that use must be authorized though a Permission to Publish Form (pdf). We can notify you of copyright issues. Commercial use may require a publication fee.
Outreach Activities
The Municipal Archives promotes awareness of and appreciation for our heritage primarily by providing access to its holdings, but, as resources permit, will also provide:
- exhibits in-house and on-line
- tours of the Archives to community groups and school groups
- presentations to conferences, meetings
