Recreation Facilities and Services Review

This Study is now completed and waiting to go in front of HRM Council.

The Community Facility Master Plan (CFMP) was approved in 2008.  The CFMP recommends the review of aging municipal recreation facilities with the goal of improving them for the future.  Community engagement is an important step in planning for our future recreation facilities.

The Regional Plan (2006) designates the Halifax Peninsula as an area for future growth and development.  Recreation facilities are a necessary part of this growth.  Some HRM facilities, such as the Needham Centre and the St. Andrew’s Centre are aging, lack accessibility, have limited space for programs, are environmentally inefficient and need maintenance.  This study recognizes that there may be more efficient ways to provide services to meet community needs.  Other recreation facilities such as the George Dixon Centre and Centennial Pool have received some investment and upgrades.

Currently, HRM staff is meeting with community stakeholders in the area to gain information and opinions on the future of these facilities.

Below are resource materials that will be useful in highlighting the focus and progression of the study.  The two online surveys that your opinions and thoughts on the future recreation needs of the Halifax Peninsula ended May 26, 2010.
