Home/Trade Shows
The Public Education Section participates in both Spring & Fall Home Shows focusing on different fire safety themes presented in our inter-active educational display booth.
Juvenile Fire Setters Program (TAPP-C)
The Public Education Section offers this program to assist with educating children who have been involved with fire play, or fire setting.
The Arson Prevention Program for Children (TAPP-C) was developed in the early 1990's as an empirically-based assessment and intervention program to address the fire setting behaviours of children and youth in the ages 2-17 categories.
The program is strictly educational, and not punitive in nature. The main goal is to encourage the participant to make wiser choices when it comes to fire and fire safety. The program is theory in nature and could include video presentations for portions of the training.
Mental Health Component:
Conducted by mental health professionals when deemed necessary.
Educational Component:
The first session is conducted in the child’s or youth’s home with at least one parent or guardian present. It is a fact finding session, as well as an introduction to the program and how it works. There will be a fire safety check of the home conducted at this time.
The second and third sessions are conducted by Public Education Officers of Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency Service at the fire station closest to the home of the child or youth, again, with at least one parent or guardian present. These sessions cover the educational aspects of fire safety, and fire setting. Some work will be sent home to be completed with parents.
At the completion of the program, the participant is asked to sign a promise statement concerning fire safety and their role; also a certificate will be presented to the participant at the completion of the program.
This service can be requested by the child's legal guardian calling the Public Education Request Line at (902) 490-4017
Schools: Fire Prevention Week Contests
Every year during Fire Prevention Week, (Since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls) the Public Education section runs a contest in which every elementary school (P-6) is invited to participate.
Each year the contest follows a fire safety theme and prizes are awarded to twenty students from each grade level. Prizes in previous years have been HRM Fire Backpacks c/w Built-In Radios, Home Fire Escape Ladders, Emergency Radio/Lights, Emergency Preparedness Kits, Fire Safes and many other great prizes.
Students carry out the tasks of the contests with their parents and guardians.

Schools: Risk Watch© Program
This training is a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sanctioned program.
The program outlines the eight leading causes of Preventable Injuries to our children and youth.
The eight categories covered in the curriculum are:

- Motor Vehicle Safety
- Fire and Burn Prevention
- Choking, Suffocation & Strangulation Injury Prevention
- Poisoning Prevention
- Falls & Playground Injuries Prevention
- Firearm Injuries Prevention
- Bike & Pedestrian Injuries Prevention
- Water & Ice Injuries Prevention
The program is for children from Grades Pre-K to Grade 8.
A coalition of the Fire Service, School Board and Department of Education supplies the curriculum to every school within HRM, and Nova Scotia has become the first Province in Canada to have every school participate.
Schools: General School Presentation

Sometimes it may not be possible for an entire school to have an assembly presentation, so as a service to teachers within the HRM school systems, we can provide general fire safety training for their class.
The presentation is “age appropriate” and offered to classes from Grades P-6. The training can also make use of a video presentation for some aspects of the program.
For more information, or to schedule this type of presentation, please call the Public Education Request Line at (902) 490-4017
