The Interim Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe that a Halifax Regional Police Officer committed a criminal offence in connection with injuries sustained by a female during arrest outside a Halifax pub.
On October 24, 2023, a female attended a pub in Halifax. Due to her behaviour, she was asked to leave, and then had several confrontations with security officers at the pub. Police were flagged down by pub staff, and the female was arrested. She was released the next morning and was later diagnosed with a fractured rib. Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that the woman’s injuries were not sustained as a result of the officer’s use of force and no criminal charges were warranted.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
