Project Updates

Urban Forest Master Plan

Approval

Halifax Regional Council approved the UFMP on September 25th. The multi-year community engagement process and research initiatives that lead to the plan's development have resulted in an integrated social, ecological, and economic strategy that strives to incorporate the values of HRM citizens.

The UFMP was developed in cooperation with Dalhousie University's School of Resource and Environmental Studies.

Urban Forest Master Plan

Implementation Workshops

Three workshops took place this past May. The public was asked to help determine priorities for the future implementation of the Urban Forest Master Plan (UFMP). Results from these workshops provided direction regarding the development of Chapter 7-Implementation Priorities - of the UFMP.

Dartmouth Cove Comprehensive Plan

Open House & Presentation

As a follow-up to the Plan + Design Workshop held in February 2012, the Project Team presented the Draft Comprehensive Plan for the Dartmouth Cove Study Area. The presentation included the evolution of the preferred option, the vision, the components of the plan and design guidelines.

Birch Cove Lakes Watershed Study

The report includes the water quality objectives established in the Preliminary Report and addresses the remaining requirements of HRM Regional Plan Policy E-17 with respect to future development within the Birch Cove Lakes watershed.

Porter's Lake Watershed Study

Public Meeting

A public meeting at the Porter's Lake Recreation Centre on May 24, 2012 presented the findings of the Final Draft Porter's Lake Watershed Study. The purpose of this study is to assess capacity of the receiving waters of Porter's Lake to assimilate future development. The study was also designed to examine conceptual level options and costs for centralized wastewater management services and central water to the Porter's Lake Centre and surrounding area. This study is being prepared to provide background information in future community visioning exercises to develop future regulations for the Porter's Lake Centre. The purpose of the public meeting was to receive comments from the public for consideration by the consultants as the report is finalized.

Lake Echo Watershed Study

Presentation of Servicing Study Findings

The findings of the Lake Echo Watershed Servicing Study will be presented to the Halifax Watershed Advisory Board on Wednesday, February 20, 2013. The meeting will be held at Halifax Hall, 1841 Argyle Street, Halifax, 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. and all are welcome to attend.

The Study was undertaken by CBCL Limited to provide background information for future community planning in the Lake Echo Community. The primary objective of the Study was to determine the extent of future development that may occur within the watershed without exceeding desired water quality objectives for Lake Echo, and what areas were best suited for development in terms of land capability and options for small scale waste water management and water supply. The Study also undertook an assessment of the impacts of the proposed development of a modular home development by PJC Development Limited, on the assimilative capacity of Lake Echo.

The purpose of the public meeting was to receive comments from the public for consideration by the consultants as the report is finalized. Public Consultation:

The Centre Plan is phase 3 of HRMbyDesign, following the establishment of the overall Regional Centre Vision and Principles in phase 1, and the creation of the Downtown Halifax Plan in phase 2. In October 2011, Halifax Regional Council initiated the Centre Plan and directed a new Regional Centre Municipal Planning Strategy and Land Use By-law be delivered by 2015. However the recent emergence of a number of growth opportunities and challenges has led Council to direct "Centre Plan Phase 1" be initiated to deliver new policies for several commercial corridors in Halifax and Dartmouth in 2012.

North-South Peninsula Bicycle Corridor

Public Consultation

Two public consultation sessions held March 29th and April 3rd (2012) presented options for a north-south bicycle corridor on the peninsula of HRM, which will be used to inform a final recommendation to Regional Council.
