Some of the responsibilties for system capacity and planning include:
- wastewater treatment capacity
- stormwater and wastewater collection system capacity
- design and construction of certain wastewater and stormwater projects

HRM has received a commitment from the Federal government for $30 million from the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund. This funding is to be used for certain categories of projects over the next several years:
- Wastewater Treatment Plant Diffusers Ratio Upgrade
- Combined Sewer Overflow Prevention
- Pumping Stations Upgrades / Wet Weather Flow Solutions
- Central Biosolids Dewatering Facility (Lagoon Phase-out)
