Give Back to the Earth ... Compost!

That's the theme for 2012's International Compost Awareness Week being celebrated this year  May 6 to 12.

In recognition of this special week, HRM Solid Waste Resources will be rewarding residents seen properly using public spaces multi-stream separation bins. Staff will be at Mic Mac Mall on Monday, May 7 and in downtown Halifax on Wednesday, May 9. You can also visit us at the Halifax Seaport Market on Saturday, May 12 to answer all your composting questions and enter to win a composting prize pack.

Composting is a natural biological process through which organic material is converted into a soil-like product called compost. Whether you are green bin composting or back yard composting, composting diverts a resource material away from landfill disposal.

Victoria Day Collection & Processing Notice

Residents of Halifax Regional Municipality are reminded that regular municipal collection services will be provided on Victoria Day, Monday, May 21, 2012.  Collection of garbage, organics or recyclables will occur as usual.

Residents are reminded that collection can begin at 7:00 am.  To ensure collection is not missed, residents may place materials curbside the evening prior to collection day.

The Otter Lake Waste Processing and Disposal Facility, the two Composting Facilities and the HRM Recycling Plant at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive will be open on Victoria Day with normal operating hours.

The Halifax Regional Municipality’s Residential HHW Depot will be OPEN Saturday, May 19 and Saturday, May 26 from 9 am to 4 pm.

Buying or Selling a House?

• Remember, the mini-bin and green cart are assigned to the property - they stay even if you move.  Ask your real estate to include this as a condition in the purchase & sale agreement.  Be sure to inspect the bins to ensure they are undamaged. 

• If your property was never assigned a cart or if it requires repairs, please call 490-4000.

Recycling in HRM just got easier! 

As of September 1, HRM residents can place ALL PLASTIC CONTAINERS in the blue bag for recycling.  No more checking for numbers on the bottom!

WHAT'S IN?
		Plastic bottles, jugs and jars for:   Beverages (including milk), shampoo, lotions, cleaners, windshield washer fluid, and other household liquids etc…
		Plastic food tubs, lids and containers for:   Yogurt, margarine, sour cream, cottage cheese, cookies, fruit & vegetable trays, salads, plastic clamshells and ice cream etc..
		Plastic Bags/ Wrap:   Grocery, bread, produce and frozen vegetable bags, bubble wrap and other plastic film/wrap items etc… Place all bags and wrap in a grocery bag, tie, then place in the blue bag with other recyclables.
WHAT'S OUT?
		Styrofoam (Garbage)
		Non-container plastics: Bottle caps, toys, dvd cases, plastic cutlery, coffee/pop cups and lids, cereal box liners, straws, pipe, packaging that is made of a combination of plastic plus paper, bulky items that do not fit in the blue bag. These items go in the garbage. Why don't we recycle bottle caps?
