Frequently Asked Questions

For an introduction to the Halifax Transit service changes starting November 18, 2024:  click here.

Why are these changes happening?

These changes are related to the Moving Forward Together Plan (MFTP), Halifax Transit’s long-term plan to better align the transit network with the needs of the municipality’s residents now and into the future.

What is an Express Route?

Express Routes provide local service in neighbourhoods (making regular stops for pick-ups and drop-offs) before providing Express (limited stop) service travelling to downtown Halifax. Express Routes (100-199) are designed to provide commuters with a high-quality service on weekdays during peak hour periods, making transit more attractive to individuals currently commuting for work and education.

Does it cost more to use an Express Route?

No, there is no additional cost for local Express Routes; there is, however, an additional cost for Regional Express Routes 320, 330, and 370 which connect outlying areas to the regional centre.

What is a branched route?

Branched routing is when a route splits into different branches that service different destinations. For example, the new route 10 A/B/C will replace the former Route 10, offering three different routes for people traveling from Dalhousie to Dartmouth.

This way, riders have more options for where they can go while still using the same main route.

Was there any consultation to inform these changes?

Halifax Transit also receives feedback from residents through 311 and from Regional Council to determine where improvements can be made.

The changes taking effect on November 18, 2024, are part of the Moving Forward Together Plan, , Halifax Transit’s long-term plan to better align the transit network with the needs of residents now and into the future.

Yes, trip planning apps will have route information that show service changes.

While Halifax Transit provides transit data for public use, the municipality does not have a standalone trip planning app.
