The Halifax Regional Municipality is working to develop watershed management plans for the Nine Mile River and Dartmouth Lakes watersheds. These plans will set goals and priorities for each watershed and lay out a plan for how to meet these goals.
Examples of goals set out in a watershed management plan include:
- maintaining or improving water quality
- managing invasive species
- improving wildlife habitat
- improving how stormwater is managed
Seeking applications
To support this work, we are seeking applicants who live or work in these watersheds to participate in Steering Committees to develop watershed management plans. Preference will be given to applicants that have professional or volunteer experience in water-related fields.
To apply for a Steering Committee, send an expression of interest to water@halifax.ca.
Being part of a Steering Commitee is a two-year commitment where members will work with municipal staff to develop a plan for their watershed. At the end of two years, the management plans will be presented to Regional Council.
Even if you are not selected to be a member of a committee, there will be many opportunities to participate in the watershed planning process.
Learn about the watershed planning process by reading our Framework for Watershed Management.
