Social Media Usage Guidelines for the Public
The Halifax Regional Municipality is committed to keeping its social media channels safe, respectful and welcoming for everyone. We encourage open dialogue, but all users are expected to follow these guidelines when interacting with our official accounts.
By participating on municipal social media channels, you agree to the following terms of use.
1. Respectful participation
We ask all users to:
- engage respectfully and thoughtfully;
- treat others with courtesy and kindness; and
- stay on topic when commenting or posting.
Comments that are offensive, abusive or inappropriate will be removed.
2. Accountability
The opinions, comments and content shared by members of the public on municipal social media channels are their own. The municipality does not endorse, nor is it responsible for, any user-generated content. We disclaim all liability associated with public comments and submissions.
3. Content we will remove
We reserve the right to monitor, moderate and remove any content that violates these guidelines, including:
- content that goes against the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
- harassment, bullying or discrimination of any kind
- content that violates the Intimate Images and Cyber-protection Act
- hate speech, including racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise hateful language
- violent, threatening, obscene or pornographic content
- serious or unfounded accusations against individuals or organizations
- defamatory, insulting or personal attacks
- spam or advertising, including promotional links
- repeated or copied comments (spam or flooding)
- posts from someone claiming to be another person
- off-topic, random or unintelligible comments
4. Consequences of violating these guidelines
- your content may be deleted without notice
- you may be blocked or muted from municipal social media accounts
- serious or repeated violations may result in permanent restrictions
