The Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting residents to the unveiling of an art project to Commemorate the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church and its contribution to the African Nova Scotian Community.
The AME Zion Church was located at the corner of Falkland and Gottingen streets and was a source of resilience and spirituality for the African Nova Scotian Community for over 100 years.
The event will be hosted at the Halifax North Memorial Library on Wednesday, February 8 at 11 a.m. During the event there will be an unveiling of the artwork by artist Charlie Marven, a video presentation from Dr. Julius Garvey, and a moderated discussion, facilitated by the municipality’s African Nova Scotian Affairs Integration Office, about the impact of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church on the local community.
Attendees can enjoy musical performances by Jah’Mila and hot chocolate provide by Hope Blooms. The event will conclude with a walk to the artwork’s installation site (at the corner Gottingen and Falkland streets) for those who wish to participate. Pre-registration for the event is not required.

Le dévoilement d’un projet artistique commémorera l’Église épiscopale méthodiste africaine de Sion
Vendredi 3 février 2023 (Halifax, Nouvelle-Écosse) – La Municipalité régionale d’Halifax invite les résidents au dévoilement d’un projet artistique visant à commémorer l’Église épiscopale méthodiste africaine (EMA) de Sion et sa contribution à la communauté africaine de la Nouvelle-Écosse.
L’Église EMA de Sion était située au coin des rues Falkland et Gottingen et a été une source de résilience et de spiritualité pour la communauté africaine de Nouvelle-Écosse pendant plus de 100 ans.
L’événement aura lieu à la bibliothèque Halifax North Memorial le mercredi 8 février à 11 h. Pendant l’événement, il y aura un dévoilement de l’œuvre de l’artiste Charlie Marven, une présentation vidéo du Dr Julius Garvey et une discussion animée par le Bureau d’intégration des affaires des Néo-Écossais africains de la municipalité, sur les répercussions de l’Église épiscopale méthodiste africaine de Sion sur la communauté locale.
Les participants pourront assister à des spectacles musicaux de Jah’Mila et se verront offrir un chocolat chaud par l’organisation Hope Blooms. L’événement se terminera par une marche vers le site d’installation de l’œuvre (au coin des rues Gottingen et Falkland) pour ceux qui souhaitent s’y rendre. L’inscription préalable à l’événement n’est pas requise.
