February is African Heritage Month. This year’s theme, Seas of struggle – African Peoples from Shore to Shore, outlines the struggles that people of African Decent faced from the shores of Africa to the shores of Nova Scotia. This theme explores the adversity that was overcome and examines the effects of slavery and sea faring of African Nova Scotians.
The municipality is holding a variety of events to celebrate the legacy, achievements, and contributions of people of African descent as part of our collective Nova Scotia heritage.
African Heritage Month Provincial Launch
The Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia will launch African Heritage Month 2023. The annual Opening Night Celebration will stream live on Facebook or YouTube.

African Heritage Month Opening Night
In partnership with the Halifax Public Libraries and the African History Month Association, and with support and funding from Support4Culture, the municipality’s Office of Diversity & Inclusion/ANSAIO welcomes residents to kick-off African Heritage Month at the Halifax North Memorial Public Library, as Opening Night returns to an in-person format this year.
Enjoy musical performances by Jah’Mila and Marko Simmonds; special words from the Africville Genealogy Society’s Beatrice Wilkins on their 40th anniversary and a proclamation reading by Mayor Savage. This event will also be live streamed on the YouTube.

Flag Raising
Attend an African Heritage Month flag raising and a special performance by Owen “O’Sound” Lee at Grande Parade (weather permitting) before moving indoors to Halifax Hall for a proclamation reading by Deputy Mayor Austin and light refreshments.
The flag raising will also be live streamed on YouTube.
Cultural District Panel
The municipality is commemorating the African Methodist Episcopal Zion (AMEZ) Church that once stood at the corner of Gottingen and Falkland streets in Halifax, by creating a historic panel at the site and revamping the plaza space.
Artist Charlie Marvin has been hired to create an art piece to be displayed on the panel. The artwork will be unveiled during African Heritage Month.

Other Events
Residents are also encouraged to take part in other events throughout the municipality celebrating African Heritage Month:
- City Hall will be illuminated in black, green, red and yellow in honour of African Heritage Month, from January 23 to 27, February 18 to 21 and February 23 to 28.
- Throughout February, the Pan-African flag will be displayed on Halifax Transit ferries and at both transit garages in honour of African Heritage Month.
- Throughout February, the Downtown Halifax Business Commission will project the Delightful Downtown Light Show, a show of light displays on the former Halifax Memorial Library Building at Grafton Park in celebration of African Heritage Month.
- Explore the Halifax Public Libraries African Heritage Month virtual portal, featuring programs that celebrate African heritage in Nova Scotia.

Célébration du Mois du patrimoine africain 2023
Février est le Mois du patrimoine africain. Le thème de cette année, Des océans de lutte – des peuples africains d’un océan à l’autre, décrit les luttes que les personnes de descendance africaine ont dû mener depuis les rivages de l’Afrique jusqu’à ceux de la Nouvelle-Écosse. Ce thème porte sur l’adversité qui a été surmontée et les effets de l’esclavage et de la navigation en mer des Néo-écossais d’origine africaine.
La municipalité organise divers événements pour célébrer l’héritage, les réalisations et les contributions des personnes de descendance africaine dans le cadre de notre patrimoine collectif néo-écossais.
Lancement provincial du Mois du patrimoine africain
Le Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia lancera le Mois du patrimoine africain 2023. La célébration de la soirée d’ouverture annuelle sera diffusée en direct sur Facebook ou YouTube.

Soirée d’ouverture du Mois du patrimoine africain
En partenariat avec les bibliothèques publiques d’Halifax et l’African History Month Association, le Bureau de la diversité et de l’inclusion/ANSAIO accueille les employés et les résidents pour le lancement du Mois du patrimoine africain à la Bibliothèque publique Halifax North Memorial, alors que la soirée d’ouverture revient en format en personne cette année.
Profitez des prestations musicales de Jah’Mila et de Marko Simmonds, du discours spécial de Beatrice Wilkins de la Société de généalogie d’Africville à l’occasion du 40e anniversaire de l’organisme, ainsi que de la lecture de la proclamation par le maire Savage.

Levée du drapeau
Assistez à la levée du drapeau du Mois du patrimoine africain et à une prestation spéciale d’Owen « O’Sound » Lee à Grand Parade (si le temps le permet) avant de se rendre à Halifax Hall pour la lecture de la proclamation par le sous-maire Austin et des rafraîchissements.
La levée du drapeau sera également diffusée en direct sur YouTube.
Panneau du district culturel
La municipalité commémore l’Église épiscopale méthodiste africaine de Sion qui se trouvait autrefois à l’angle des rues Gottingen et Falkland à Halifax, en créant un panneau historique sur le site et en réaménageant l’espace de la place.
L’artiste Charlie Marvin a été embauché pour créer une œuvre d’art qui sera exposée sur le panneau. L’œuvre d’art sera dévoilée pendant le Mois du patrimoine africain.

Autres activités
Les résidents sont également encouragés à participer à d’autres événements dans toute la municipalité célébrant le Mois du patrimoine africain :
- L’hôtel de ville sera illuminé en noir, vert, rouge et jaune en l’honneur du Mois du Patrimoine africain, du 23 au 27 janvier, du 18 au 21 février et du 23 au 28 février.
- Tout au long du mois de février, le drapeau panafricain sera hissé sur les traversiers du Halifax Transit et dans les deux garages de transport en commun en l’honneur du Mois du patrimoine africain.
- Tout au long du mois de février, la Downtown Halifax Business Commission projettera le Delightful Downtown Light Show, un spectacle de lumières sur l’ancien bâtiment de la bibliothèque Halifax Memorial, au parc Grafton, pour célébrer le Mois du patrimoine africain.
