Evacuation order lifted

At approximately 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan.22, 911 received a call from the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO) about a chemical spill in the BIO building. At approximately 6 p.m. the situation was resolved, the evacuation order lifted and the MacKay Bridge was reopened.

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that, due to a chemical spill at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (1 Challenger Drive, Dartmouth), a 250-metre mandatory evacuation is in place and will remain until the scene is secure. This area includes the MacKay Bridge and the bridge has been closed as a precaution.

Residents within the Ocean Breeze neighbourhood are not within the mandatory evacuation area and therefore not impacted by the spill. However, they are advised to avoid the area until further notice and it is deemed safe by municipal authorities.
