Citizens urged to stay off lakes and ponds

Halifax Regional Police have received calls from concerned citizens in relation to people venturing out onto the ice surface of lakes and ponds. Police are reminding the public that it is currently not safe to be on the surface of lakes and ponds as there is thin ice and open water in many areas throughout the municipality.

We remind the public that the municipality’s ice thickness testing program has not yet begun for the 2021/22 winter season as it is not yet safe for staff to be on the ice. When testing resumes, the guide can be found at https://www.halifax.ca/parks-recreation/programs-activities/skating/ice-thickness The guide lists the body of water, the specific location that was checked, the ice thickness at that location and the date it was checked.  Police emphasize the need for caution and are asking the public to avoid recreational activities under the current circumstances, such as walking and skating, on frozen bodies of water until the ice thickness creates a surface where it is safe to do so.
