The Halifax Regional Municipality is pleased to announce the recipient of a $200,000 public art project for the revitalized Dartmouth Sportsplex.
Award-winning Mi’kmaq artist Jordan Bennett has been selected to design, create, and install pieces of art for the newly updated facility.
The art project will have two components. The primary focus will be on the development of a signature, wall-mounted feature for inside the new main entrance to the Sportsplex.
The secondary focus will be to develop a design application to fill 1,500 square feet of interior window space that will be prominently displayed for the enjoyment of people walking past the facility.
Bennett’s proposed artwork encapsulates elements that will make the renovated Dartmouth Sportsplex a community hub for leisure, recreation, and social interaction.
Bennett wrote in his proposal: “This piece is about growth, health, and community. I wanted to create a sense of reflection for those from diverse cultures and communities.”
Regional Council approved a policy in 2008 that stipulates one per cent of the total construction costs of a new or renovated publicly accessible municipal facility will be invested in public art.
The request for proposals for this project saw 33 submissions, which were all reviewed by a peer jury consisting of arts sector professionals and members of the community.
Bennett’s artwork will be finished in time for the Dartmouth Sportsplex grand re-opening in January.

La Municipalité régionale d’Halifax est heureuse d’annoncer la bénéficiaire d’un projet d’art public de 200 000 $ destiné au Sportsplex de Dartmouth rafraîchi.
L’artiste Mi’kmaq primé Jordan Bennett a été choisi pour concevoir, créer et installer des objets d’art pour l’installation nouvellement mise à jour.
Le projet artistique aura deux volets. L’objectif principal sera la création d’une unité murale phare pour l’intérieur de la nouvelle entrée du Sportsplex.
L’objectif secondaire sera la création d’une application conceptuelle visant à remplir une fenêtre de 1 500 pieds carrés qui sera mise en évidence pour en faire profiter les personnes passant devant l’installation.
L’œuvre d’art proposée par M. Bennett englobe des éléments qui feront du Sportsplex de Dartmouth rénové un carrefour communautaire de détente, de loisirs et d’interactions sociales.
Dans sa proposition, M. Bennett a écrit « Cette œuvre d’art symbolise la croissance, la santé et la communauté. Je tenais à susciter la réflexion chez les membres de diverses cultures et communautés. »
En 2008, le Conseil régional a approuvé une politique qui précise que 1 % des coûts de construction totaux d’une installation municipale nouvelle ou rénovée qui est accessible au public sera investi dans l’art public.
La demande de propositions pour ce projet a donné lieu à 33 présentations, qui ont toutes été examinées par un jury de pairs composé de professionnels du secteur artistique et de membres de la communauté.
L’œuvre d’art de M. Bennett sera terminée à temps pour la grande réouverture du Sportsplex de Dartmouth, en janvier.
