In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion, 12 commemorative markers will be installed this year at significantly relevant locations throughout the municipality.
Three of these iconic sculptural markers were installed today in Fort Needham Park.
The Corten and stainless-steel markers will feature incised quotes and text from first-hand accounts of the explosion, and illustrate important civic stories relating to the event, context, and recovery.
The three markers being erected this week collectively tell the story of commemoration and the city’s resiliency and rebirth:
‘Bearing Witness’ – Offers the context for the Needham Interpretive Program and tells the 100th Anniversary story, located at the Needham Street Entrance
‘The Will to Rebuild’ – sited at the Novalea entrance and references the importance of the Halifax Relief Commission; placed in proximity of the Relief Commission’s marker
‘Toward the Future’ – Situated at the Union Street entrance and references the Bell Tower and its significance both as memorial to the event and a call to a brighter future
Other markers around the municipality will recognize the significant impact the explosion had on the communities of Dartmouth, Bedford, and Halifax. The markers will also highlight the incredible resiliency of communities to rebuild in the shadow of tragedy.
The markers are designed by Rayleen Hill Architecture and Design of Dartmouth, and are key components of the Fort Needham Memorial Park Master Plan implementation.

The website sets out the thematic framework for the markers, their associated content, and their tentative installation sites. Images for each marker will be updated as installations progress.

Installation des repères commémoratifs du centenaire de l’explosion d’Halifax
En reconnaissance du centenaire de l’explosion d’Halifax, 12 repères commémoratifs seront installés cette année dans des lieux fort pertinents de la municipalité.
Certains de ces repères sculpturaux emblématiques ont été installés aujourd’hui dans le parc du Fort Needham.
Les repères en acier corten et en acier inoxydable porteront des citations et du texte entaillés venant de témoins directs de l’explosion, en plus d’illustrer les récits civiques importants qui se rapportent à l’événement, au contexte et au rétablissement.
Les trois repères qui sont érigés cette semaine racontent ensemble l’histoire de la commémoration et de la résilience et renaissance de la Ville :
« Témoignage » – Ce repère, qui met en contexte le programme d’interprétation de Needham et raconte l’histoire du centenaire, se situe à l’entrée de la rue Needham.
« La volonté de reconstruire » – Ce repère, situé à l’entrée de la promenade Novalea, mentionne l’importance de la Commission de secours d’Halifax; il a été situé à proximité du repère de la Commission de secours.
« Vers l’avenir » – Situé à l’entrée de la rue Union, ce repère mentionne la tour Bell et son importance en tant que monument commémoratif de l’événement et d’appel à un avenir plus prometteur.
D’autres repères situés un peu partout dans la municipalité reconnaîtront la grande incidence que l’explosion a eue sur les collectivités de Dartmouth, de Bedford et d’Halifax. Les repères souligneront également l’incroyable résilience des collectivités, déterminées à être reconstruites dans l’ombre d’une tragédie.
Les repères ont été conçus par Rayleen Hill Architecture and Design, de Dartmouth. Ce sont des éléments clés de la mise en œuvre du Master Plan pour le Fort Needham Memorial Park.
