The Halifax Regional Municipality will be launching its online Plant of the Month program from June to September, at the Halifax Public Gardens.
The Halifax Public Gardens are home to more than 100 different genus species exotic plants. These plants, from America, Oceania, Africa, Asia, and Europe, are housed in greenhouses during the winter, sheltered from the cold, and planted in the ground with the arrival of warm summer weather.
As one of the finest surviving examples of a Victorian garden in North America, one of the main purposes of the Halifax Public Gardens is the presentation of exotic plants for residents and visitors. The online Plant of the Month program celebrates this mission and encourages the discovery of these plants both within the Halifax Public Gardens and in other parks located throughout the municipality.
Each month, from June to September, the municipality will showcase images and interesting facts about a select plant through Facebook and Twitter. Information will also be shared about the location of the plant in the Halifax Public Gardens or one of the municipality’s parks.
As this is the first year for this program, staff will be assessing the public response to determine if this initiative should be continued moving forward.

Lancement du programme de la plante du mois
La Municipalité régionale d’Halifax lancera son programme en ligne de la plante du mois de juin à septembre, aux Jardins publics d’Halifax.
Les Jardins publics d’Halifax abritent plus de 100 espèces de plantes exotiques différentes. Ces plantes, venant d’Amérique, d’Océanie, d’Afrique, d’Asie et d’Europe, se trouvent dans des serres durant l’hiver, à l’abri du froid, et sont plantées dans le sol lorsqu’arrive le temps doux de l’été.
Un des plus brillants exemples de jardins victoriens en Amérique du Nord, les Jardins publics d’Halifax comptent parmi leurs objectifs principaux la présentation de plantes exotiques aux résidents et aux visiteurs. Le programme en ligne de la plante du mois permet de célébrer cette mission et encourage la découverte de ces plantes dans les Jardins publics d’Halifax et dans d’autres parcs de la municipalité.
Chaque mois, de juin à septembre, la municipalité mettra en valeur, sur Facebook et Twitter, des images et des faits intéressants à propos d’une plante choisie. Elle partagera aussi des renseignements sur l’emplacement de la plante dans les Jardins publics d’Halifax ou un autre parc de la municipalité.
Puisqu’il s’agit de la première année du programme, des membres du personnel évalueront la réaction du public afin de déterminer si cette initiative devrait se poursuivre par la suite.
