Wednesday, June 29, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – Preparations are underway across the Halifax Regional Municipality as we get ready to celebrate Canada’s 149th birthday, on Friday, July 1.

Residents of all ages are invited to get together with family and friends this Canada Day to participate in a multitude of fun, free, and family-friendly events being hosted in our communities.

Put on your finest red and white and kick off Canada Day with free pancake breakfasts being held in Dartmouth and Halifax. Head over to the official Canada Day ceremonies to sing Oh Canada from the top of Citadel Hill, and then check out the Maple Lodge Farms Family Fun Festival on the South Common.

The main event of the evening takes place at Alderney Landing with the biggest free outdoor concert of the year featuring Dear Rouge, Born Ruffians, Yukon Blonde, Reeny Smith and Kid Koala. End the day with an incredible fireworks show set off from the Halifax Harbour at 10 p.m.

Halifax Transit is offering free Alderney and Woodside ferry service all day on Canada Day, as follows:

Alderney Ferry: 7:30 a.m. to 2 a.m.
Woodside Ferry: 6:37 a.m. to 11:07 p.m.

Ferry passengers are encouraged to bring a food or monetary donation in lieu of fare payment to support FEED NOVA SCOTIA.

Passengers are asked to be patient and expect occasional line-ups throughout the day due to the large number of people anticipated to use the ferry service on Canada Day. Additionally, access to the Alderney Ferry Terminal will be restricted to the sliding entry doors at the southeast corner of the building after 9 p.m., to safely queue passengers waiting to board.

Halifax Transit thanks you in advance for your cooperation. Please note buses will be operating on holiday service schedules, and regular fares apply. For holiday service schedules by individual route, visit www.halifax.ca/transit/Schedules/index.php.

This action packed day is made possible by generous sponsors: The Village Shops at Dartmouth Crossing, Canadian Heritage, Molson Coors Canada, Maple Lodge Farms, Pepsi, Holiday Inn Harbourview, CTV, C100 and 101.3 The BOUNCE, and the Halifax Regional Municipality.
