Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – Please be advised that the municipal overnight winter parking ban will continue to be enforced from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 16, to allow crews to properly clear the streets and sidewalks from today’s storm.
Vehicles must be off municipal streets during these hours. Residents should also be aware that under section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act, tickets can be issued and vehicles can be towed any time they are parked in a manner that interferes with snow clearing.
Environment Canada continues to have winter storm and flash freeze warnings in effect for the Halifax region. Snowfall started overnight and will continue until later this morning with a total accumulation of 10-15 centimetres expected. Blowing snow, drifting and reduced visibility will continue until noon, when conditions are forecast to change over to rain.
Right now crews are fully mobilized and focusing on Priority 1 plowing and Priority 2 center line cuts. As the precipitation shifts to rain, crews will focus on clearing catch basins to help prevent flooding. Despite these efforts, road conditions are still expected to deteriorate throughout the day. Motorists are urged to reduce their speed and approach intersections with caution, if they need to be on the roads at all.
The overnight winter parking ban is in effect from now until March 31. It will be enforced only during declared snow and ice events, such as the ongoing storm.
The easiest way to be prepared when snow is coming is to sign up for CityWatch notifications of parking bans. Fill out a registration form, call 311 or email contactus@311.halifax.ca. Subscribers will receive timely alerts by phone, email, and/or text message when the ban is in effect and again when it is lifted. Residents who received these notifications last winter will continue to receive the service this year. Standard text messaging rates apply.
