On April 17 at 11:10 a.m., Halifax Regional Police responded to a suspicious vehicle and possible impaired driver in a parking lot in the 100 block of Kearney Lake Road, Halifax. Patrol officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, a grey Jetta. Officers requested the driver exit the vehicle to provide a breath sample for a Roadside Screening Device. The driver immediately took off at a high rate of speed toward Highway 102. Officers pursued the Jetta with emergency equipment activated. As the Jetta turned onto the ramp to Highway 102, it collided into a guardrail. Officers conducted a high-risk arrest of the driver. Incidental to arrest officers located and seized a loaded handgun in the driver’s possession. No one was injured during this incident. Officers have seized the Jetta for a search warrant.
The driver, a 35-year-old man from Halifax will be held for court and is facing the following Criminal charges, firearms offences, flight from Police, and Impaired Driving charges. Investigators with the General Investigation Section and Forensic Identification Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division are conducting the investigation which is in the early stages.
