Police arrest impaired driver

Halifax Regional Police attempted to stop an impaired driver who fled from police this afternoon in Halifax.

At approximately 12:10 p.m. on November 26, a witness notified police of a suspected impaired driver in the area of Clayton Park Drive and Lacewood Drive. Halifax Regional Police officers located the vehicle in the parking lot of the Halifax Shopping Centre and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The lone occupant of the vehicle refused to comply with the officers direction and drove away exiting onto Mumford Road. The vehicle was pursued by officers until it entered the 102 Highway from Joseph Howe Drive and increased its speed where the pursuit was terminated for public safety reasons. A 38-year-old man, who is known to police, was identified by the officers as the driver of the vehicle. Other police units were able to attend the suspect's address, near the 200 block Waterfront Drive in Bedford. Shortly after arriving, the suspect was observed turning onto the street and once again refused to stop for police until he drove to the end of the dead end street, where he exited the vehicle near the water. In the process of arresting the suspect, officers deployed a Conducted Energy Device, also described as a Taser, and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. EHS attended and the suspect was taken to the hospital to be examined as a precaution only.

The investigation is continuing and a decision on charges will be made at the conclusion of the investigation.
