At 3:30 a.m. on July 14, Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of single vehicle collision in the 7000 block of Quinpool Road in Halifax, involving a white SUV travelling at a high rate speed that struck a utility pole. Callers advised 911 dispatch that the driver fled on foot. Officers then confirmed the SUV was stolen from Yarmouth earlier in the evening. A police service dog was deployed to track the driver. At 3:48 a.m. officers located and arrested the driver hiding in a parking lot in the 7100 block of Quinpool Road. The male driver showed signs of impairment and was taken for a breath test.
The SUV did damage a utility pole and wiring. Traffic inbound on Quinpool Road was blocked for just over an hour while Nova Scotia Power repaired the utility pole.
A 20-year-old man from Yarmouth is being held for court on Monday and will face charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, dangerous operation of motor vehicle, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and refusal of a breath test.
