Police investigate impaired driver and vehicle collision hit & run
At 7:06 p.m. on August 1, Halifax Regional Police received multiple driving complaints of an orange Mitsubishi Lancer traveling inbound to Halifax on Barrington Street at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles by driving into oncoming traffic. A patrol officer observed a matching vehicle on Barrington Street stopped in traffic and was able to observe the driver and another male passenger. The officer confirmed the orange Mitsubishi Lancer was the same vehicle from the driving complaints. When the officer activated the emergency lights to stop the vehicle the driver took off at a high rate of speed. The officer did not pursue the vehicle due to the heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Shortly after at 7:19 p.m. Halifax Regional Police received reports of a motor vehicle collision hit and run at Agricola Street and Macara Street in Halifax. The suspect vehicle was the same orange Mitsubishi Lancer. Patrol officers located the abandoned vehicle on vehicle near by at Robie Street and Russell Street. Callers advised that the driver and passenger fled on foot. Plain clothes officers from the Liquor Enforcement Unit and a Police Service Dog were deployed to track the driver.
At 7:39 p.m. officers located and arrested male on Agricola Street matching the description of the driver and the police service led to the same male. The male was identified by the original officer as the driver. The male driver showed signs of impairment and was taken for a breath test. However, at this time the passenger has not been located. The investigation is ongoing at this time and officers are actively search for the passenger.
The passenger is described as:
White male, tanned complexion, approximately 25-year-old, medium build, wearing a white t-shirt, gray knee length shorts and black shoes. Last seen fleeing on foot near Robie Steet and Russell Street.
The A 37-year-old male driver, from Hammonds Plains, is being held for court on Thursday and will be facing charges of dangerous operation of motor vehicle, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and impaired driving related charges.
