Yesterday, the Halifax Regional Police Traffic Unit issued 52 tickets for motor vehicle-related offences.
Members issued 52 summary offence tickets: 15 for speeding (including one for stunting), 10 for driving without insurance and 27 for other offences including using a cellphone while driving, invalid safety inspections and unregistered vehicles.
Traffic members spent time in the area of Dunbrack Street and Ross Street as well as Leiblin Drive in Halifax monitoring for traffic safety violations.
At approximately 3:25 p.m. a member of the Traffic Unit observed a motorcycle travelling at a high rate of speed on Kearney Lake Road in Halifax. The officer observed the vehicle’s speed at 127 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
A 16-year-old youth was ticketed for stunting under the Motor Vehicle Act, a charge that is automatically laid when a vehicle is travelling more than 50 km/h over the speed limit. The fine in Nova Scotia for stunting is $2,422.50 and six points are assigned to the driver’s record. In addition, the youth was suspended from driving for seven days and the vehicle the youth was driving was seized and impounded. The youth also received a ticket for passing in oncoming traffic.
In a continued effort to address traffic safety issues and educate citizens on the rules of the road, our officers focus on speed enforcement. We all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe. If you see someone driving dangerously, report it to police by calling 911.
