Halifax Regional Police issued 54 tickets for speeding, stunting and other motor vehicle-related offences yesterday.
Members from the HRP Traffic Unit issued 54 summary offence tickets: 21 for speeding; 1 for stunting; and 32 for other offences including no insurance, expired plates, failing to change lanes, tinted windows, using cell phones and speeding in a construction zone.
At approximately 7 a.m. an officer observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 102 near Bayers Road in Halifax. The officer captured the vehicle’s speed at 116 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. A 34-year-old Hammonds Plains man was ticketed for stunting under the Motor Vehicle Act, a charge that is automatically laid when a vehicle is travelling more than 50 km/h over the speed limit.
In addition, the man was suspended from driving for seven days and the vehicle he was driving was seized and impounded.
We remind motorists to slow down in construction zones and be aware of temporary speed signage. In Nova Scotia, fines are doubled for drivers speeding in work zones and demerit points are also assigned to drivers’ records.
In a continued effort to address traffic safety issues and educate citizens on the rules of the road, our officers focus on speed enforcement. We all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe.
