The Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting residents to the annual Halifax Explosion Memorial Service on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 9 a.m. The event will take place at the Bell Tower in the Fort Needham Memorial Park.
The devastating explosion occurred on Dec. 6, 1917, when two ships - the French munitions ship, the Mont Blanc, and the Norwegian relief ship, the Imo - collided in the Narrows of Halifax Harbour. Over 2,000 people were killed and an additional 9,000 were injured, which was the deadliest man-made explosion at the time. Almost all of north-end Halifax was destroyed, and buildings throughout Halifax and Dartmouth were significantly damaged.
This event will honour the tragic loss of men, women and children and honour the resiliency, recovery and rebirth of our community. Naval ships across the Dockyard will also sound their whistles for one minute at 9:04 a.m.

La Municipalité régionale d’Halifax invite les résidents au service commémoratif annuel de l’explosion d’Halifax le mercredi 6 décembre à 9 h. L’événement aura lieu à la tour Bell dans le parc Fort Needham Memorial.
L’explosion dévastatrice s’est produite le 6 décembre 1917 lorsque deux navires – le navire de munitions français, le Mont Blanc, et le navire de secours norvégien, l’Imo – sont entrés en collision dans le passage du port d’Halifax. Plus de 2 000 personnes ont été tuées et 9 000 autres ont été blessées, soit l’explosion la plus meurtrière à l’époque. Presque tous les quartiers nord de Halifax ont été détruits, et des bâtiments partout à Halifax et à Dartmouth ont été gravement endommagés.
Cet événement honorera la perte tragique d’hommes, de femmes et d’enfants, ainsi que la résilience, le rétablissement et la renaissance de notre collectivité. Les navires dans chantier naval sonneront leurs sifflets pendant une minute à 9 h 4.
