Investigators in the General Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division have laid charges in a number of recent robberies and thefts as well as drug charges after a traffic stop in Halifax on Sunday night.
At 9:09 a.m. on October 30, Halifax Regional Police responded to a robbery call in the 0-100 block of Dentith Road. A man entered a drug store, handed a note to staff indicating he had a knife and then demanded prescription medication from the pharmacy. The suspect fled the area with an amount of product and no one was injured during the incident. The suspect is known to police and was made arrestable for robbery.
At approximately 9:45 p.m. on October 30, patrol officers attended Spencer Avenue in Halifax to attempt to arrest the suspect in the Dentith Road robbery. Officers noted a lone man driving a car stop near their location, however, the trunk then opened and a second man got out. Police performed a traffic stop, and as a result, seized a quantity of hydromorphone, cocaine and marihuana, a sum of Canadian currency and drug paraphernalia. The driver and his passenger were taken into custody without incident.
The driver, a 25-year-old man from Kinsac, faces charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking in hydromorphone, as well as possession of cocaine and marihuana. He was released on an Appearance Notice and is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court today.
Police determined the second man was the suspect from the Dentith Road robbery and arrested 25-year-old Michael Keltie Baldwin of Halifax. Based on the ensuing investigation, it is alleged that Baldwin also committed several other recent crimes, including:
- Theft of jewelry at Walmart, 90 Lamont Terrace, at 8:20 p.m. on October 17.
- Robbery at Petro-Canada, 7015 Bayers Road, at 10:05 p.m. on October 22 where a lone man entered the business and demanded money from the clerk. The man left the business with cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash.
- Robbery at Petro-Canada, 51 Sackville Drive, on October 28 at 9:30 p.m. where two men entered the store, and then one of them threatened the clerk with a syringe and demanded cigarettes. The men obtained a quantity of cigarettes and fled the store. That evening at 5:20 p.m., one of the suspects, 27-year-old Chancelor Knight Faulkner of Halifax, was arrested without incident at an apartment building in the 100 block of Old Sambro Road. Faulkner appeared in Dartmouth Provincial Court yesterday to face charges of robbery and breach of a recognizance.
- Theft of drones from Mighty Small Cars Store, 552 Windmill Road, at 4:20 p.m. on October 29.
Baldwin was questioned in relation to all of these crimes. He was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court today to face three counts of robbery, one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of theft under $5000, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, and three counts of breach of a recognizance. He also faces one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking in hydromorphone and one count of possession of cocaine under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act as a result of the traffic stop on Sunday evening.
