The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving a serious injury sustained by an adult male during an arrest in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • On the night of April 7, 2025, members of the Halifax Regional Police (HRP) responded to a call relating to an intoxicated male on a Halifax Transit bus who was being disruptive, causing damage to the bus and possibly in possession of a knife.
  • Officers located the male on Scot Street and Joseph Howe Drive.
  • The male was combative and resisted arrest. It required multiple officers to control the male. One of the officers was bitten and required medical attention.
  • The male was placed in custody and brought to HRP’s Prisoner Care Facility where he continued to resist officers.
  • At some point throughout this process the male was injured and later brought to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken rib.

Due to the serious injury sustained by the male, SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
