The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents to take caution leading up to the impending storm. While snowfall warnings have lessened, the storm is expected to deliver high winds and a significant storm surge. The storm is expected to be most powerful this evening and overnight.

The municipality’s Emergency Organization Centre (EOC) was activated at 8 a.m. this morning. The EOC team will continue to monitor the storm and provide updates to residents as necessary.

Emergency Comfort Centres

The Emergency Management Office (EMO) will initiate the opening of comfort centres in select locations across the municipality as needed.

Locations of comfort centres will be communicated in the coming hours.

The municipality is recommending that residents living in flood-prone areas, or locations with only one access point, to stay with friends or family for the night, or if needed, visit the nearest comfort centre in advance of the storm and remain at that location until it is safe to return home.

Halifax Transit

All ferry service will be suspended as of Thursday afternoon.

The last scheduled ferry service today is as follows:

  • Woodside to Halifax – 2:07 p.m.
  • Halifax to Woodside – 2:22 p.m.
  • Alderney to Halifax – 2:15 p.m.
  • Halifax to Alderney – 2:30 p.m.

Shuttle service will be provided at all three ferry terminals.

Several bus routes have been detoured as a result of MacKay Bridge high-sided vehicle wind restrictions.

Updates to bus service will be posted to Halifax.ca/transit and @hfxtransit on Twitter.

Parks and Recreation

The Public Gardens is now closed until further notice.

Many recreation programs will conclude today at 4:30 p.m. with some facilities closing earlier. Please contact your local facility for the status of your program.

311 Contact Centre

The 311 contact centre will be closed for regular operations at 8:00 pm this evening; however, please be advised that the public can continue to call 311 for urgent issues related to municipal services.

Please visit Halifax.ca and follow @hfxgov for service updates and cancellations.
