A male youth is facing multiple charges after fleeing from police and colliding with two police vehicles in Halifax early this morning.
At 12:45 a.m., members of the Halifax Regional Police West Quick Response Unit with the assistance of members of the Emergency Response Team stopped a vehicle at the intersection of Titus Street and Dutch Village Road in Halifax. The vehicle had previously been reported stolen sometime overnight on May 30 from a residence on Spruce View Drive in Bedford. Officers approached the vehicle in an attempt to arrest the driver, whom they recognized, when the driver backed up, hitting the police vehicle behind him then drove forward hitting the police vehicle in front of him and almost hitting two of the officers who had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.
The driver sped away at a high rate of speed on Joseph Howe Drive and headed outbound on the 102 Highway, turning off at the Peggy’s Cove exit towards Timberlea. The driver continued to operate the vehicle in a reckless manner at a high rate of speed resulting in the termination of the pursuit. Officers lost sight of the vehicle but soon after located the vehicle unoccupied in the 0-100 block of North Green Road.
An arrest warrant has been issued for the driver, who is a 16-year-old youth from Bedford. He has been charged with assaulting a police officer with intent to resist arrest, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property over $5,000, mischief and breach of an undertaking. The incident remains under investigation as police try to locate the youth.
