Yes, YOU! Halifax Regional Police launches its 2021 cadet recruitment campaign
Today, Halifax Regional Police (HRP) is launching a recruitment campaign for its 2021 cadet class, following on a successful round of recruitment that led to the hiring of 23 cadets by HRP after they graduated in October 2019.
The next HRP Police Science Program will begin in early 2021, with the goal of recruiting up to 24 cadets for the program. We want to be clear that as important conversations around policing and resourcing take place, this recruitment is not meant to “add” officer positions. It’s simply an effort to keep up with succession planning and manage ongoing vacancies. We look forward to participating in ongoing community discussions.
“Today we are excited to launch the next phase of our recruitment campaign and are looking for compassionate and community-minded people to join our service,” said Halifax Regional Police Chief Dan Kinsella. “The current discussions on policing underpin the importance of trust, accountability and diversity in policing. As part of our next class, we look forward to training and preparing the next generation of police officers who bring a variety of different life experiences and perspectives to help move policing forward.”
Branded as Yes,YOU!, the HRP recruitment campaign’s goal is to attract applicants who reflect and appreciate diversity in experiences, perspectives, beliefs, opinions, genders, gender identities, gender expressions and sexual orientations, ages, faiths and races. As part of the campaign, HRP is encouraging people from diverse backgrounds to apply, including those who may not immediately see themselves as a police officer.
“We’ve seen COVID-19 impact both the workforce and the job market for a lot of people – and many are understandably reviewing future career paths. Now might be the right time to apply, even if you haven’t necessarily considered a policing career before,” said Chief Kinsella. “People in communities across Nova Scotia who are service-oriented and want to make a positive difference, and, above all, are reflective of our communities, are encouraged to come forward.”
Successful applicants will become cadets in a 38-week police training program designed and delivered by HRP. The program will be based at the Halifax Regional Police Training School in Dartmouth, which is a recognized private career college by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education. Upon successful completion of the training program, cadets have the opportunity to work with HRP as either full-time police officers or reserve officers, depending on availability.
HRP recruitment team members will be hosting virtual information sessions, will be available via email and will be monitoring Instagram and Twitter (both can be found at @JoinHRP) to answer questions and provide more information on the application process.
