Update: Police release homicide victim’s name and charge man

Police are releasing the name of the victim and have charged a man in relation to a homicide that occurred in the Barrington Street area of Halifax.

An autopsy was conducted by the Medical Examiner earlier today and the cause of death has been ruled a homicide. The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Damien Lamoureux. Our thoughts are with Damien’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

At approximately 8:26 p.m. on May 21, Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of a man injured in the 1200 block of Barrington Street, Halifax. Three people were arrested at the scene and transported to Halifax Regional Police headquarters. Today, investigators in the Special Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division charged 26-year-old, Mitchell William Coles of Halifax with second degree murder. The other two people taken into custody were released without charges earlier today.

Original reports received by police were that the man had a firearm and had been injured. After completing the initial investigation, police have learned that the victim was stabbed and later succumbed to his injuries. At this time, we do not have any evidence of firearm shots being fired as part of this incident. Investigators do not believe this to be a random incident and are not looking for any other suspects. Update: Traffic has now reopened to pedestrians and vehicles, along Barrington Street between Bishop Street and South Street. Halifax Regional Police have cleared from this area. Investigation is concluded at this time.

Update: At approximately 11:35 p.m., the victim, a 21-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries. The name of the victim is being withheld pending next of kin notification. The investigation is now a Homicide. Officers have located and arrested three adults and are not looking for any other suspects. Investigators with the Major Crime Unit of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division and Forensic Identification Unit are conducting the investigation, which is ongoing.

On May 21 at approximately 8:26 p.m., Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of gun shots with a man injured at the intersection in the 1200 block of Barrington Street, Halifax. Multiple officers responded to the scene and located a man with life threatening injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. Several officers are currently on scene, including K-9 and members of the Emergency Response Team. There is no suspect description at this time.  

Police are requesting the public avoid the area.

Traffic Blocked: All pedestrian and vehicle traffic is blocked in the in 1200 block of Barrington Street. Traffic will remain blocked for an extended period of time while investigators process the scene.
