The Halifax Regional Municipality has won two awards of merit in the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Architecture.
An Award of Merit in the Large-Building Category was awarded to Abbott Brown Architects, in collaboration with the firm Diamond Schmitt Architects, for renovation of the Zatzman Sportsplex in Dartmouth. The jury noted the improved re-use of the existing pool and arena spaces, which were united by a new connector/circulation hub. The Zatzman Sportsplex now uses internal daylight and layered views into adjoining spaces to create an enhanced environment for the public.
An Award of Merit in the Small Building Category was awarded to Abbott Brown Architects for the renovation design of the Alderney Pedway in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The jury recognized the designer’s effective strategy of “humanizing an indifferent public space with the intervention of scaling elements that create a variety of inviting spaces for people to hang out either alone or in groups.”
The Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Architecture was created in 1989 by then Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable Lloyd Roseville Crouse. The Award is administered by the Nova Scotia Association of Architects and was created to encourage and recognize outstanding architectural design by the Association’s members. Since its creation, architects of many notable buildings in Nova Scotia and around North America have been recognized for their work.
His Honour, The Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, ONS, QC, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, presented the awards at Government House today.

La Municipalité régionale d’Halifax aobtenu deux prix au mérite dans le cadre des Prix du lieutenant-gouverneur pour l’excellence en architecture.
Un Prix du Mérite dans la catégorie Grand bâtiment a été décerné à Abbott Brown Architects, en collaboration avec la firme Diamond Schmitt Architects, pour la rénovation du Zatzman Sportsplex à Dartmouth. Le jury a noté la réutilisation améliorée des espaces existants de la piscine et de l’aréna, qui étaient unis par un nouveau connecteur ou centre de circulation. Le Zatzman Sportsplex utilise désormais la lumière du jour interne et des vues superposées dans les espaces adjacents pour créer un environnement amélioré pour le public.
Un Prix du Mérite dans la catégorie Petit bâtiment a été décerné à Abbott Brown Architects pour la conception de la rénovation de la promenade Alderney à Dartmouth (Nouvelle-Écosse). Le jury a reconnu la stratégie efficace du concepteur qui consiste à « humaniser un espace public indifférent par l’intervention d’éléments de taille qui créent une variété d’espaces invitant les gens à se promener seuls ou en groupe ».
Les Prix du lieutenant-gouverneur pour l’excellence en architecture ont été créés en 1989 par le lieutenant-gouverneur de l’époque, l’honorable Lloyd Roseville Crouse. Le Prix est administré par l’Association des architectes de la Nouvelle-Écosse et a été créé afin d’encourager et de reconnaître la conception architecturale exceptionnelle qu’élaborent les membres de l’Association. Depuis sa création, les architectes de plusieurs édifices remarquables de la Nouvelle-Écosse et de l’Amérique du Nord ont été reconnus pour leur travail.
Son Honneur, l’honorable Arthur J. LeBlanc, ON, QC, lieutenant-gouverneur de la Nouvelle-Écosse, a remis les prix à la résidence du Gouverneur général.
