The province’s independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has concluded its investigation regarding an allegation of assault against officers involved in arresting a male on the early evening of May 29, 2022.

Police were called to a hotel located in the Halifax Regional Municipality as a result of the actions of an unwanted male at the hotel. The male was harassing guests and employees of the hotel and appeared to be acting like he was on something. The male was interested in a female guest at the hotel, who was later discovered to be a person the male was under court orders to stay away from.

Three HRP officers responded to the call. On arrival, the officers verified that the male was indeed on court orders to stay away from the female guest at the hotel and arrested him for such breaches. Although the male offered minor resistance to the officers, there was nothing out of the ordinary in returning him to the station.

The following day, SiRT was contacted due to the arrested male being diagnosed with a broken rib. The SiRT investigation showed the arrested male had indicated on two different occasions that evening his rib injury occurred in a fight previous to his involvement with the police. Based on these findings, no charges are warranted against any officer involved in the arrest.
