Halifax Regional Police refer officer involved shooting to SiRT

UPDATE (August 25, 2023 at 4:10 a.m.):

Police remain on scene in the 200 block of Willett Street and also in the 0-100 block of Plateau Crescent. However, traffic is allowed on both streets. 

Any further update in relation to the Plateau Crescent incident will be released by the Serious Incident Response Team. 

There are no further significant media updates to report from the shift.

Halifax Regional Police refer officer involved shooting to SiRT

Halifax Regional Police have referred an incident involving discharge of a service weapon that occurred last night to the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT).

Last night, at approximately 10:15 p.m., officers were in the 100 block of Plateau Crescent in Halifax looking for a man in connection with an aggravated assault involving a stabbing that had occurred earlier in the evening. As officers approached the man, he pointed a firearm towards the officer, following which the officer discharged their service weapon. The man has been taken to hospital with what are believed to be life-threatening injuries. As the incident has been referred to SiRT, they will handle all further inquiries related to this incident while their investigation continues.

Plateau Crescent is closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic for an extended period of time. We ask members of the public to remain away from the area to allow the investigation to continue.

Police presence in Halifax

There is a police presence 200 block of Willett Street in Halifax. The police have contained the area and there is no threat to public safety. 

We ask the public to avoid the area to allow officers to conduct the investigation. Further information will be provided when available.
