SIRT Investigating Serious Injury

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving a serious injury sustained by an adult female after an interaction with the Halifax Regional Police (HRP).

Preliminary information suggests the following:

•              On July 16, 2024, HRP responded to a 911 call regarding a domestic dispute.

•              Officers attended and took an adult female into custody. In the process, an officer took her to the ground.

•              After the woman was released from custody, she attended hospital and was diagnosed with an injury to her liver.

Due to the serious injury sustained by the female, the SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
