Halifax Regional Police is recruiting people who are committed to ensuring the safety of children at designated school crosswalks, enjoy being outdoors and want the flexibility of working part-time.
Crossing guards who work regular part-time belong to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), and are offered a range of benefits as well as an attendance bonus. The hourly rate is $12.74 (under negotiation).
Candidates must meet the security clearance requirements administered by Halifax Regional Police.

Duties & responsibilities
- Safely escort elementary school children across busy crosswalks throughout HRM
- Enforce all policies and procedures in the operation of the crosswalk
- Abide by all laws dealing with pedestrian traffic at the crosswalk
- Report any problems or safety concerns arising at the assigned crosswalk to the supervisor or program manager
Qualifications
- Experience as a Crossing Guard would be an asset
- Valid driver’s licence and vehicle would be an asset
- This position would be especially attractive to retired/semi-retired people
Skills & abilities
- Ability to stand or walk 2 – 3.5 hours a day in all weather conditions
- Ability to maintain control under pressure
- Ability to work within minimum supervision
- Possess adequate vision and hearing
Hours of work: Various shifts leading up to 3.5 hrs/day Monday to Friday, 10 months of the year.
Salary: The hourly rate is $12.74 (under negotiation) in accordance with the collective agreement between CUPE Local 4814 and the Halifax Regional Municipality.
