District 7 Coun. Waye Mason was elected by acclamation today by his fellow councillors to serve as deputy mayor for Halifax Regional Municipality.

The new deputy mayor takes over from Deputy Mayor Steve Craig who held the position for the past 12 months.

“I’m proud of our work these last five years to build Regional Council by supporting a culture of respect and collegiality. We’ve also worked hard to make sure all councillor concerns are heard in chambers,” Mason said.

“Nothing gives me more satisfaction than helping us reach a common understanding, and if we don’t all agree, making sure we’ve had a good debate and explored the alternatives before making our decision.”

Deputy Mayor Mason has been a member of Regional Council since October 2012. In that time he has been an active and engaged councillor in many municipality initiatives, such as the growth of active transportation, working to construct the Emera Oval pavilion building, addressing construction mitigation concerns, engagement in the Centre Plan, as well as being a strong voice on the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities (as vice-president), and Halifax Board of Police Commissioners.

Mason serves on many municipal committees, boards, and commissions, and continues to look for opportunities to make positive contributions as an elected official.

A long-time resident of south end Halifax, Deputy Mayor Mason has grown businesses, led member organizations, and developed the arts and culture sector in Nova Scotia for over two decades. His career in the music industry spanned artist development to live event production, and he has become a well-known business and strategic consultant both inside and outside the cultural sector.

Mason founded and was executive director of the Halifax Pop Explosion Association from 2001 to 2010, and was an instructor in music business at the Nova Scotia Community College from 2007 to 2012. He has been involved with several community organizations, including the Gottingen Street Merchants Association, Khyber Arts Society, Right to Know Coalition of Nova Scotia, and as long-serving member and past president of Music Nova Scotia.

Waye and his wife Marnie have two children.
