As part of our continued focus on pedestrian safety, Halifax Regional Police and Halifax District RCMP have committed to releasing a monthly vehicle/pedestrian collision report to provide police and citizens with more contextual information on this issue.
During the month of December, there were 32 vehicle/pedestrian collisions in Halifax. This represents a decrease from the 39 incidents reported in December 2014. For 2015, there were 208 vehicle/pedestrian collisions, a 21 per cent decrease (-54 incidents) compared to 262 collisions in 2014.
Fifty-nine per cent (122 incidents) of vehicle/pedestrian collisions reported between January 1 and December 31, 2015 occurred in crosswalks compared to 60 per cent (156 incidents) for the same period in 2014. Of the 217 pedestrians involved:
• 58 reported no injury
• 114 experienced minor injuries
• 28 experienced moderate injuries
• 2 experienced severe injuries
• 5 passed away as a result of the collision
• 10 did not report their injuries to police
