Halifax Regional Police (HRP) and Halifax District RCMP release a monthly vehicle/pedestrian collision report to provide police and citizens with more contextual information on this issue.

Ninety-one vehicle/pedestrian/bicycle collisions have been reported since January 1, 2018. Of the 91collisions, 12 involved a bicycle. The remaining 79 were vehicle/pedestrian collisions, with 86 pedestrian victims. This represents a decrease of five incidents (5.95%) over the same time period in 2017.

Seventeen vehicle/pedestrian collisions were reported in May. Month over month, this represents an increase of 10 incidents from the seven incidents reported in April 2018. Year over year, there was an increase of seven incidents from the 10 incidents reported in May 2017.

For January 1- May 31, 2018, 60.76 per cent (48 incidents) of vehicle/pedestrian collisions occurred in crosswalks as compared with 70.24 per cent (59 incidents) reported during this period in 2017.

Of the 86 pedestrians involved in reported collisions in 2018:

  • 2 were fatally injured
  • 3 experienced severe injuries
  • 7 experienced moderate injuries
  • 45 experienced minor injuries
  • 19 experienced no injuries
  • 10 did not report their injuries to police
