The Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting residents and visitors to a formal launch of the Halifax Explosion 100th Anniversary Commemorative Markers Program this Friday, July 20.
In recognition of the centennial anniversary of the Halifax Explosion, 12 commemorative markers have been installed at locations throughout the municipality. Three of these iconic sculptural markers have been placed at Fort Needham Memorial Park.
The Corten and stainless-steel markers feature incised quotes and text from first-hand accounts of the explosion, and illustrate the important civic stories relating to the event, context, and recovery.
The official public unveiling and tour will start at 10 a.m. at the Needham Street entrance to Fort Needham Memorial Park. The ceremony will begin with a First Nations welcome, and will conclude at the Memorial Bell Tower with the installation of the 2017 time capsule.
Several dignitaries will be on hand for the launch, as will RHAD Architects (markers architect), and AldrichPears Associates, who drafted the interpretive content for the markers.

Le public est invité au dévoilement des repères d’interprétation de l’explosion d’Halifax
La Municipalité régionale d’Halifax invite les résidents et les visiteurs au lancement officiel du programme des repères commémoratifs du centenaire de l’explosion d’Halifax, ce vendredi 20 juillet.
Afin de souligner le centenaire de l’explosion d’Halifax, 12 repères commémoratifs ont été mis en place dans des endroits répartis dans toute la municipalité. Trois de ces repères sculpturaux emblématiques ont été mis en place au Fort Needham Memorial Park.
Les repères en acier corten et en acier inoxydable portent des citations et du texte entaillés venant de témoins directs de l’explosion, en plus d’illustrer les récits civiques importants qui se rapportent à l’événement, au contexte et au rétablissement.
Le dévoilement public officiel et la visite guidée commenceront à 10 h à l’entrée du Fort Needham Memorial Park située sur la rue Needham. La cérémonie commencera par l’accueil des Premières Nations et se conclura à la Memorial Bell Tower, où la capsule temporelle de 2017 sera installée.
Plusieurs dignitaires seront sur place à l’occasion du lancement, tout comme RHAD Architects (les architectes responsables des repères) et AldrichPears Associates, les auteurs du contenu interprétatif des repères.
