Correction: The December vehicle/pedestrian collision statistics released on January 23, 2019 did not include the motor vehicle/pedestrian fatality that occurred on December 14, 2018. There were four pedestrians fatally injured and not three. The report has been corrected as attached.

December vehicle/pedestrian collision statistics

 Halifax Regional Police (HRP) and Halifax District RCMP release a monthly vehicle/pedestrian collision report to provide police and citizens with more contextual information on this issue.

 A total of 283 vehicle/pedestrian/bicycle collisions have been reported from January to December 2018 in Halifax Regional Municipality. Of the total collisions, 65 involved a bicycle. The remaining 218 incidents were vehicle/pedestrian collisions, with 230 pedestrian victims. This represents an increase of two incidents over the same time period in December 2017.

 There were 27 vehicle/pedestrian collisions reported in December 2018. Month over month, this represents a decrease of five incidents from the 32 incidents reported in November 2018. Year over year, there was a decrease of two incidents from the 25 incidents reported in 2017.

 From January 1 to December 31, 2018, 65.14% (142 incidents) of vehicle/pedestrian collisions occurred in crosswalks as compared to 67.58% (148 incidents) reported during this period in 2017.

 Of the 230 pedestrians involved in reported collisions in 2018:

  • 4 were fatally injured
  • 9 experienced severe injuries
  • 27 experienced moderate injuries
  • 114 experienced minor injuries
  • 61 experienced no injuries
  • 15 did not report their injuries to police
