Community designed and painted street murals

Intersections along Creighton and Maynard Streets

About the artwork

Halifax’s North End, a historically African Nova Scotian neighbourhood, was identified through the North End Complete Streets Project as an opportunity for enhanced travel ways aided by temporary curb extensions.  Seven intersections were selected and murals were used to make the space safer and build a sense of ownership through community engagement.

Artists Holly Carr, Elyse Moir and Vanessa Thomas were selected by a jury from a pool of artists with community engaged art practices to lead the process of creating a series of street murals in Halifax's North End. The artists lead design workshops with 5th and 6th grade students at nearby Joseph Howe Elementary School. Over the course of a rainy spring and hot summer, local youth groups and camps painted the murals. Community members expressed enthusiasm around the project as it brought colour back to the street.

A community gathering took place in early October 2024 offering a ride and walk-along art unveiling. Through the enhancement and shortening of crosswalks, these community painted spaces have already changed the way many interact with the street by building a sense of belonging, ownership, and presence for the community to make their way to school and work every day.

This project was funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies through the Asphalt Art Initiative.
