Overview
The Halifax Regional Municipality is working on a multi-year project to upgrade the road, pedestrian, and cycling infrastructure on Caldwell Road from Astral Drive to Hampton Green.
The existing narrow asphalt sidewalks will be replaced with a multi-use pathway on the east side of the road and a concrete sidewalk on the west side of the road. This project is approved under the Active Transportation Priorities Plan and supports the Integrated Mobility Plan efforts to create connected, healthy, affordable, and sustainable travel options.
Phase 1 – beginning July 15, 2022
Phase 1 has now been tendered.
Work will take place from Mondays to Fridays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, from Monday, July 18, 2022 to November 30, 2022 on Caldwell Road, from Deerbrook to Astral drives.
Stop-and-go traffic will be in place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each weekday while work is underway. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained during peak hours (from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.). Motorists should expect delays and are advised to use alternative routes whenever possible. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
This phase of work involves a new multi-use pathway, sidewalk, and paving renewal.
See the map below for additional details.
The majority of phase 1 will be completed during the 2022 construction season, with the exception of the concrete sidewalk on the west side of the road, which will be installed in the 2023 construction season. This timeline is necessary for utility operators (Bell, Nova Scotia Power, etc.) to relocate the utility poles.
Phase 2
Phase 2 of this project, extending infrastructure from Deerbrooke Drive/Cherrywood Drive to Hampton Green, will be designed and constructed in a future year.
Project updates will be shared on this page and on social media channels.
