Extra duty is a paid overtime duty, which officers may perform in addition to their regular scheduled duties. Requests for extra duty officers are made by external organizations for one-off and regular events such as sporting events, parades, escorting heavy loads in traffic, Scotiabank Centre events, retail locations, etc.
The duties are paid for by the external organization and not by HRP. The Extra Duty program is administered by HRP on a cost recovery basis to provide additional service to our community at events where public safety may be a concern.
The use of extra duty officers reduces the impact on daily police resources that may otherwise have to respond to situations at these events and makes businesses and event organizers financially responsible for police resources they may require because of their activities.
