Overview:
The Halifax Regional Library Board is an external board responsible for guiding the libraries of HRM and providing a wide range of managerial support. From finance, to human resources, to community relations, this Board sets the priorities and direction for the libraries of HRM.
Objectives/Functions:
1. To provide direction to Halifax Public Libraries on strategic planning and priorities, financial support and guidance, human resources support, and continuing strong community relations;
2. Empowered to acquire property, borrow, enter into agreements for the provision of regional public library service, provide library facilities and collections, and to perform such other functions as specified in the Nova Scotia Libraries Act; and
3. The Board is the policy-making body for the provision of regional public library service in Halifax and is the employer responsible for employee terms and conditions of employment.
Membership: Eleven (11) members
• Six (6) citizens of municipality, appointed by the Regional Council
• Two (2) elected members of the Regional Council
• Two (2) members appointed by the Province of Nova Scotia
• The Mayor of Halifax, who is automatically appointed by virtue of their elected office
