Waste sorting guides are available for single-family homes, apartments, condominiums, and businesses. Sorting rules are the same for all, however, collection limits and the use of privacy bags change depending on property type.
Every building in the Halifax region (including single-family homes, multi-unit residential buildings, restaurants, commercial properties, and institutions) is required to separate garbage, recycling, organics (green cart), paper and cardboard for collection, as outlined in Bylaw S-600 [PDF].
Reference the household guide if you live in a single family detached home, a duplex, or an apartment building with six (6) units or less, and receive curbside waste collection.
Reference the apartment guide if you live in an apartment building with more than six (6) units, or, live in an apartment and do not receive curbside waste collection.
Reference the condo guide if you live in a condominium.
Reference the business guide for businesses and commercial buildings.
